Analucia

Skill Level: Advanced Intermediate

This shawl was designed for my maternal grandmother, Angelina Lucia, to wear to my cousin’s wedding on Memorial Day weekend of 2013.

The Analucia shawl consists of seven sections. Some sections are written with sizes small, medium, and large in a single set of directions, but at other times you’ll find each size written separately to make the instructions for your size easier to read. This does make the pattern very long, but don’t let that discourage you! Because of the way this shawl is constructed you will not be able to cast on and move forward exclusively working from the charts. Each section of the design does have a chart for the lace, however, to understand setup rows, picked up or held stitches, and direction of knitting you will need to refer to the written instructions for that section. I advise following along through the written instructions and then moving to chart reading when the pattern indicates that the chart has begun. Charts will then indicate when to refer back to the written instructions to finish the section.

When working from the charts read right side (RS - odd number) rows from right to left and wrong side (WS - even number) rows from left to right. A legend is provided under each chart and will include any symbols relevant to that particular chart.

Stitch counts given throughout the pattern DO NOT include the edging stitches unless otherwise indicated. Also, be aware that if you follow the option for the Leaf Edge the stitch count of the Leaf will vary on every other row.

Yarn Note: If you’re using Fiddle Knits Polka yarn for this project you should work at a slightly tigher gauge since the yarn blocks out quite well. Where Aria gets 16 sts per 4” in the k2tog, yo pattern you may get 18 sts in the same pattern using Polka and the shawl will blossom wonderfully. The yarn has lots of natural elasticity, so don’t be afraid to take advantage of that when it comes time to block your piece.
