Blue Hawaiian
A free slouch hat pattern

The Blue Hawaiian hat is a good choice for knitters that love hats, but aren’t fond of working crown decreases. You’ll simply work until the hat reaches desired length and then join together with either a 3-needle bind off (as called for in the pattern), or bind off all the stitches and then seam the top. No fancy stitches required.

Yarn
1 (1, 2) skein Fiddle Knits Fibers, Bebop
[100% superwash merino; 231 yds; 100 g; DK weight],
Color: “Blue Hawaiian”
Needles
US 6 / 4mm needle 16” circular,
US 8 / 5mm 16” circular
1 extra size 8 needle for bind off
Adjust needle size to obtain correct gauge.
Finished Sizes
19 (21, 23)” circumference
Length determined by knitter
Gauge
Round gauge is unessential.
(see Rnds 1-4 below for gauge stitch)
With smaller needles: 22 sts = 4” in pattern stitch
With larger needles: 19 sts = 4” in pattern stitch

The Pattern
Using smaller needles, cast on 90 (100, 110) sts,
place marker and join for working in the rnd.
Rnds 1 & 2: [K1, p1] around.
Rnd 3: Knit
Rnd 4: Purl
Work these 4 rnds until piece measures 2 inches from cast on.
Change to larger needles.
Continue working the 4 pattern rnds until piece measures 10 (11, 11.5)” or desired completed length.
Three Needle Bind Off
Knit across only the first half of the rnd – k45 (50, 55) sts – place these stitches on a spare needle.
Knit across the second half of the rnd – k45 (50, 55) sts.
Turn hat inside out.
Hold needles parallel and bind off using 3-needle bind off.
If you don’t want to work a 3-needle bind off then simply bind off all stitches, turn hat inside out, lay flat, and sew top together across bind off.
Finishing
With hat still inside out, sew the “points” (see right) together. Turn hat right side out. Top sides of hat will be dimpled.
